PWC Goes to the White House
Thelma Reta flew to Washington DC to represent Pilipino Workers Center, Association of Filipino Workers and National Domestic Workers Alliance at an important media event where Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and President Obama himself showed up to make the announcement. This media event was to announce that the Department of Labor is trying to change the regulation that exempts caregivers or "companions" of the elderly, disabled and children from minimum wage and overtime protections. PWC and other organizations have been advocating for a change in this law to give proper protections to caregivers who do tough, arduous and vital work. Thelma spoke about her own experiences as a caregiver and how she has worked for as little as $35 a day as a live-in caregiver. She testified how it is only fair to provide minimum wage and over-time protections for all workers, including caregivers/companions. Food Distribution
Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) along with Association of Filipino Workers (AFW) and Los Angeles Workers in Action (LAWIA) provides a Community Food Pantry every Friday Saturday. PWC is an official partner with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and the USDA.
Please arrive by 7:30pm on Friday or by 2:15pm on Saturday. We are strict about these times.
Jeepney Tour
The Pilipino Workers Center'sJeepney is an original 1944 Willy's Jeepney by the Sarao Company in the Philippines. It was brought to Washington State in the 1970's by a couple who rode it around the neighborhood. Now it is here in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles at PWC! It now gives Historic Filipinotown Mobile Tours in conjunction with PWC's youth media program, PDUB PRODUCTIONS.
