Thelma Reta flew to Washington DC to represent Pilipino Workers Center, Association of Filipino Workers and National Domestic Workers Alliance at an important media event where Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and President Obama himself showed up to make the announcement. (Click Here to Watch Video.) This media event was to announce that the Department of Labor is trying to change the regulation that exempts caregivers or "companions" of the elderly, disabled and children from minimum wage and overtime protections. PWC and other organizations have been advocating for a change in this law to give proper protections to caregivers who do tough, arduous and vital work. Thelma spoke about her own experiences as a caregiver and how she has worked for as little as $35 a day as a live-in caregiver. She testified how it is only fair to provide minimum wage and over-time protections for all workers, including caregivers/companions.
