May 1st March...Celebrating International Workers Day!
From the main stage, it was a beautiful sight. The peaceful but determined and motivated march was so large that it seemed as though it had no end. As far as the eye could see down Broadway and along the adjacent side streets, downtown was pack with people who had come together for a united purpose: to demand immigration reform in 2010 and to denounce racist, unconstitutional laws such as SB1070 in Arizona.
“I loved every moment of it. I learned so much and was so happy that I could share the day with my daughter,” Rebecca Aragon, PWC staff.
Tita Boots, a Filipino caregiver and member of the Association of Filipino Workers (AFW) spoke on the main stage. “Today, we, the caregivers and other low-wage Filipino immigrant workers stand in unity and solidarity with our fellow workers in the world whom are now commemorating May First as the International Workers Day. May First is our Day, a day to celebrate all the toiling masses of workers who through our sweat and blood, through our labor, make the economies of our countries prosper and grow. ” more of Boots speech

Executive Director of PWC, Aquilina Soriano Versoza,
was one of the emcees on the mainstage. “All of us need to educate ourselves and everyone around us about why America as a whole needs comprehensive, humane immigration reform. For democracy, for justice and fairness, America needs Immigration Reform, and America needs immigrants. We all need to have our voices counted and heard otherwise we will be drowned out by the racist and hate motivated arguments of the anti-immigrant people, and our communities, family and children will all continue to suffer.”
A broad group of coalitions came together this year to organize this large unified march, knowing that especially now when whole communities are being criminalized in Arizona, it is important to fight for concrete immigration reform legislation. And PWC will continue to stand together with everyone until we make the immigration system in America just and humane!
